The HATS Manual -> The Methodology -> The Facilitator
In the Theatre of the Oppressed Boal calls the facilitator "the Joker". Rather than a facilitator,
they are a difficultator. The Joker is, at different times, director, facilitator and workshop
leader. The Joker is:
- an intermediary between the audience and the performers
- an intermediary between the reality of the workshop and the world
The Joker also challenges assumptions, pursues disagreements between participants and highlights
contradictions that emerge in the process.
